Steps and Procedures to Purchase and Build a Bamboo Home

1. Purchase land and review your budget and timeline for your project. Purchase land with proper zoning for the project you envision. Determine your budget and how you will finance your project. Get clear about what you are responsible for and how much it will cost to prepare for and finish the project, such as permits, infrastructure, platform, roofing, floors, electrical, plumbing, doors, windows, cabinets, appliances and all contractors and labor.

3. Contact our sales department for detailed information and questions. Be prepared to discuss why you are interested in a bamboo house, where you want to build, construction timelines, financing method, project scope and what you plan on using it for (i.e. primary dwelling, guest cottage, vacation rental). Make a list of questions you would like answered.

4. Tour a bamboo home. We have built over 70 bamboo homes on Maui, Molokai, Oahu, Hawaii and Kauai. Set up an appointment with us in advance to tour bamboo homes. We will reimburse round trip airfare (up to $400) to visit one of these homes if you purchase a home. Bring your camera, questions and ideas of what you would do with the home on your property.

5. Talk with our sales department to decide what you want. There are many standard home models featured on our website. Choose one that fits your needs and your budget.

6. Sign A&E Design contract and provide a deposit. To customize buildings or floor plans or submit for building permit before house construction or submit for a building loan or mortgage, an Architecture & Engineering Design Contract will preceed the building contract.

7. Get the drawings from us and get a building permit. Obtain blueprints from us signed by our architect. Hire a permit expediter or take these yourself to your local building permit office. You need to provide building site and local building code information. There is a fee for a building permit. The fee and the time required to obtain a building permit varies with each jurisdiction.

8. Sign Bamboo House contract and provide 50% deposit. The contract will state clearly what you are purchasing, the costs, and the estimated time of arrival of your house. You provide BT with 50% of the total cost of the house.

9. The bamboo house is built in Vietnam. Once we receive the deposit we begin building the house at the factory. Timeline for construction depends on the number of orders and season. After the house is built, it is disassembled, put in a container and shipped by boat. Shipping takes about one month. Typically, your house should ship in about 3-6 months after you place the order.

10. Build the platform with electrical and plumbing access. This must be ready when the house arrives. You can hire someone to do this or do it yourself. You need permits for plumbing, electrical and sewage systems. We can provide the blueprints for the platform.

11. Provide 50% final payment. Before the house is shipped you are responsible for paying the remaining 50% of the cost of the house plus shipping and tax.

12. The house is shipped to the port nearest you. Shipping takes about one month. Bamboo Technologies coordinates shipping and notifies you with the approximate date of arrival.

13. Transport the house to the construction site. You are responsible for transporting the 20' or 40' container or unloading the container onto a truck and transporting it to your house site.

14. Assemble the house. This will take 3 days to 2 weeks. You contract a technical supervisor qualified by Bamboo Technologies to come to the home site and direct your local contractor or construction crew. This will assure quality home assembly in the shortest time.

15. Finish the House. Install roofing material, doors, windows, electrical, plumbing, insulation, flooring, appliances, furniture. Get the roofing material on right away, before the bamboo gets wet, then doors, windows, electrical, plumbing. Seal cracks and joints with insulation and caulk to make house airtight and bug proof. Install finished flooring.

16. Get inspections for plumbing and electrical, as soon as you complete them.

17. Bamboo Technologies will inspect the house for final compliance for building codes. We want to make sure every home is built perfectly and every customer satisfied.

18. Move in. House warming party and blessing. We highly recommend one. It will warm your friends as much as it will warm your new home.

19. Make a referral and get a commission. We will provide a referral fee if you refer someone to us who in turn purchases a bamboo house. Contact us for information.
