Bamboo Certification, Research and Testing
Structural Bamboo Certification. The ICC Evaluation Service Report ESR-1636 (Nov. 2004) states that Structural Bamboo Poles produced by Bamboo Technologies comply with the following codes: 2003 International Building Code (IBC), 2003 International Residental Code (IRC) and 1997 Uniform Building Code (UBC). Certified bamboo produced by BT is available for architects, designers and builders.

Building Codes and Bamboo Construction

Paper presented at the Vietnam Intentional Conference on Non-Conventional Materials and Technologies on March 12, 2002, describes research and testing to make bamboo an accepted construction material in the USA.

Abstract: This paper presents the work of Bamboo Technologies toward development of an accepted building code for habitable bamboo structures in the Western World. Six different prefabricated bamboo structures have been designed, erected, and permitted as non-dwelling structures in Hawaii, USA. The houses are manufactured in Vietnam using Vietnamese bamboo, Bambusa stenostachya. This species is currently being tested by ICBO certified labs. Results of tests and subsequent reports will allow construction of these houses to be permitted as dwelling structures in the Western World. Read the full paper.

Research Funding. Bamboo Technologies has researched and tested the quality and endurance of the bamboos from Vietnam for over a decade. Funding from charitable donations made to the International Bamboo Foundation has made this possible. This testing established protocol that will allow other structural species of bamboo throughout the world to be used by builders and architects.
