Bamboo Technologies earns ICC Certification for Bamboo Poles for Bamboo Living Homes
Bamboo Technologies was started in 1995 as a shared vision to create environmentally sustainable housing alternative. Bamboo was chosen because of its superior ability to create biomass and replenish the earth’s oxygen supply, while creating very high quality and beautiful structural material.
Building houses in Vietnam was chosen because of Vietnam's history of managing sustainable bamboo forests and their exquisite craftsmanship. Jeffree Trudeau and David Sands built the first bamboo house on Maui in 1996. There are now over 40 Bamboo Living Homes in Hawaii.
Bamboo Technologies is the leader in the international certification of bamboo as a building material, and is developing strategic alliances to build Bamboo Living Homes and Resorts in the Hawaiian and Pacific Islands, mainland USA, Caribbean, Europe, Asia, Central and South America.
“We are now building insulated bamboo homes,” explains David Sands, AIA architect and co-founder of Bamboo Technologies. “With insulation, bamboo houses are suitable almost anywhere in the world".

Biography of Jeffree Trudeau
Jeffree established Bamboo Technologies with David Sands in 1995, shortly after moving to Maui with his wife and family.Their son was born in the bamboo forest of Maui and from that time on the dream and vision of a home of bamboo unfolded. In 1996, Jeffree and David built the first prefabricated bamboo structure on site in Maui, the first ever permitted in the U.S.
Jeffree has an Architectural Degree from RPI. He has 35 years of alternative structure building experience. With his own designs he built turnkey projects in the Adirondack Mountains in New York. His first publication was in Fine Homebuilding for a vertical log home built north of Albany in the shape of a figure eight.
Biography of David Sands, AIA
Cofounder with Jeffree Trudeau, David is a licensed architect practicing since 1983 in Massachusetts and for 15 years in Hawaii. David is founder and partner of EcoArchitecture LLC of Maui. He serves as VP of the International Bamboo Foundation and is former president of the American Institute of Architects Maui Chapter. He has served on the Int'l Building Code Committee for INBAR, the international bamboo organization (NGO) headquartered in Beijing. That committee’s work resulted in the ISO bamboo standard and provided the preliminary work that has resulted in ICC Evaluation Report No. 1636 – Structural Bamboo Poles.
Twelve years ago when he heard a Maui hotel had remodeled and had taken out hundreds of eight foot tall mahogany doors, David recycled fifty of them into the walls of his home. Walls that slid back to reveal the native koa forest that he and his brother planted surrounding the home. When the lumber was delivered to the site, seeing the quantity of trees that had been cut to build his home, David made a commitment to find an alternative material that would be rapidly renewable, readily available and would not destroy a forest. Within two years he and Jeffree Trudeau built the first bamboo building. Yoga is David’s other great love. He served for nine years on the Board of Trustees for Kripalu Center, world's largest yoga center, two years as chairperson. He maintains a daily practice of yoga. Bamboo and Yoga, he will tell you, is a great combination.
